DESCRIPTION:This should be a pretty short meeting this week\, we only have the room until 19:00 so we'll be starting at 18:30 promptly - hence why I set the event to start at 18:15.\n\nFOSDEM (Free & Open Source Developers of Europe Meetup) is a massive conference that members of the society have attended for the past 3 years. If you would like to find out more about what the conference entails or how the trip will work then come along to this meeting. There is absolutely no obligations at this point so find out if this is something you'd be interested in. If you can't make this meeting or only see this post later\, please just speak to us at one of our events\, email me wds509@york.ac.uk or drop me a message on Matrix @wds509:york.pub and I'll talk you through everything.\n\nAbout FOSDEM\n\nFOSDEM is an annual event held each year in Brussels\, Belgium. With over 1\,000 different talks going on throughout the two-day period\, it is the biggest conference in the world FULL STOP (can't find the source for that but they definitely said so last year).\n\nThere are speakers covering every facet of computer science you can possibly imagine from Linux Distributions to Open Source Data Analysis and even representatives from the EU Commission.\n\nYou can find out more at https://fosdem.org but the best way to see the true variety is by looking at last year's schedule. On Desktop you can look at this MASSIVE calendar view for Saturday and Sunday or have a look around starting from https://archive.fosdem.org/2026/schedule/.\n\nThe dates for FOSDEM 2027 are Saturday January 30th and Sunday January 31st which is the weekend immediately before refreshers week. The exact plans around transportation and accommodation will be decided based on how many people are interested etc. but basically its pretty hands off from the society point of view - the society has practically no money to fund the trip unfortunately so its on you but we will do our best to work together so we can make things as affordable as possible. The conference itself is completely free though and there may be some YorkSU funding that can contribute to your costs if you are on a low income.\n\nLast year there was 8 people from UoY and most of us ended up staying in a hind of hotel/hostel hybrid thing which was near the station but you can always stay wherever you feel like.\n\n

CATEGORIES:External Speaker
DESCRIPTION:We are incredibly excited to welcome our first speaker of the year in collaboration with our friends at Social Policy Society\, European Society & UN Association.\n\nOmar Mohsine is the United Nations' Open Source Coordinator and Co-Chair of Open Source United. After Studying Computer Science at the University of Montpelier\, Omar has been working with the United Nations since 2008\, taking up the role of Open Source Coordinator in 2021.\n\nTackling key challenges like digital sovereignty and a sustainable digital transition is a perfect illustration of how Free & Open Source sits at the nexus of technology and politics.\n\nIn this talk we'll hear: what the UN is doing to increase the adoption of FOSS\; why this is important in the first place and how\, by bringing together the open source community and international diplomatic community\, the UN can better achieve it's key strategic goals.\n\nTalk abstract coming soon.\n\n
