DESCRIPTION:Dr Ben Gibb-Reid - Accented authenticityː Towards explainable linguistic phonetic methods to authenticate allegedly deepfake audio\n\nWith the increasing development and availability of audio deepfakes (also known as ‘voice clones’)\, a new question is being asked of forensic speech science practitioners: is this questioned recording produced by an authentic speaker\, or was it a synthetically produced deepfake? This paper addresses the need for science-based human analytical techniques that relies on segmental and suprasegmental phonetic features. The primary aims are effectiveness and explainability - successfully separating audio deepfakes from authentic speech\, but using features that are explainable to non-experts. This study presents an analysis of 16 speakers from various accent backgrounds and assesses authentic and deepfake productions of their vowels\, their vowel space and the presence/absence of /ɹ/ in various contexts (e.g. producing car alarm as [cɑː əlɑːm] rather than [caɹ əlaɹm]). The study shows how deepfake audio causes accents to sound more close to southern standard English or US English\, and how voice conversion across accents is particularly poor\n\n

CATEGORIES:External Event
DESCRIPTION:This is an external event from Tom Stoneham who we heard from at the start of the year\, he reached out me on Matrix because he thought it might be interesting for YFOSS so we'll see what it's like. Join the original event: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/CVItzHYjQwy4ZD0-7nj0BQ#/registration\n\nTo be clear\, this event is not organised or affiliated with YFOSS\, we just think it might be interesting. Here is the original text:\n\nWhether it's in teaching\, assessments\, publishing\, research\, professional development\, or administration\, AI has become inescapable in university life. An AI-saturated future is treated as inevitable\, and those not embracing it are told they will be left behind.\n\nUniversities are following a narrative written in Silicon Valley. Is this the future of academia we want? Have students and staff been asked? Do we have alternative ideas for how AI can be used in ways which protect academic values in teaching and research?\n\nThis online session will be a facilitated space for academics\, professional staff\, and students alike to share our experiences with AI and discuss when and how universities should embrace AI\, and when they should stay well clear of it.\n\nMost importantly\, we want to explore if there are ways for us to get organised across the sector so these decisions aren't made by university management and tech companies alone but involve everyone affected.\n\nThis event is organised by a group of university staff and students in collaboration with Pull The Plug\, a campaign calling for ordinary people to get a say in how AI is used in our lives: https://pulltheplug.uk/\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Smart Data Donation Service: New national data science infrastructure\, hosted at York - Dr David Zendle\n\n"There are important debates around how digital environments shape health\, cognition\, and social life. Yet making real progress is often difficult because independent researchers typically cannot access high-quality behavioural data\, much of which is centralised in proprietary corporate repositories. Even when digital trace data does become available\, it is rarely able to be securely and ethically linked to rich\, individual-level outcomes that transformative research typically requires.\n\nData donation offers a lawful\, participant-centred route to addressing these gaps: it enables participants to contribute their own platform-held data for research\, helping to reduce corporate data monopolies and mitigate industrial conflicts of interest.\n\nSecurely ingesting\, processing\, fusing\, storing\, and providing access to sensitive behavioural data at scale requires robust technical capability and stringent governance. In this talk\, I will describe the Smart Data Donation Service (SDDS)\, a new piece of national research infrastructure designed to centralise these capabilities." - David Zendle\, SDDS Director\n\n

DESCRIPTION:In fairness\, Discord is a pretty good application. It's full of features and makes moderating really large servers a breeze which is why tonnes of communities use it from Home Assistant to The Rest is Politics.\n\nThat's said\, it's not encrypted and while it has so far avoided being acquired by the big five (GAFAM)\, Discord still has yet to make a profit (citation needed). Sadly this means that the spectre of enshittification looms large with many people already dissatisfied with features like the recently introduced quests or the legally mandated age verification.\n\nEnter: Matrix.\n\nMatrix is a chat platform that has many of the features that discord has but with one huge party trick: federation. Users can create an account on any server they choose (or host their own) and interact with every other user on different Matrix servers. Join us this week to hear more more about the good\, the bad and the ugly of Matrix as well as about the brand new york.pub matrix server which everyone here at York can get themselves on!\n\nAGM\n\nWE need you! DESCRIPTION:Sometimes people criticise Free and Open Source software by saying it looks and feels outdated compared to its proprietary counterparts.\n\nMaybe sometimes there is a grain of truth in this but plenty of software has moved with the times. Beyond the rounded corners\, subtle gradients and fluid animations\, what has really changed in the last 20 years? Let's take a trip back in time to CIRCA 2005 and dive into the joys of Debian 2\, GIMP and Stop motion animation.\n\nJoin us as we spark up some period appropriate VMs and dive into the mid-2000s computing experience. We're in the library in case you want the full pre-internet experience\, reference books and all. Bring your laptop!\n\n

DESCRIPTION:You may remember a couple of months ago we heard from Dr Wei Wu about his involvement in RISC-V\, the open source CPU ISA that is seeing huge attention particularly in China but also around the world. This event is not organised by the Free & Open Source Society and is part of the SYS3 course but Pengcheng has invited anyone who is interested to join. RISC-V is an incredibly interesting topic so if you missed Dr Wu last time then this is a great opportunity about the impressive work that has been happening in this area.\n\nYou can join online or in person.\n\nAbstract\n\nAs a young and open ISA standard\, the RISC-V has the potential to capture a quarter of the global processor market share within its 20-year lifespan. Some bold predictions even suggest that RISC-V will become the most dominative ISA in the worldwide IT industry by 2036\, serving as a cornerstone of the global open-source ecosystem due to its open and free nature. In this lecture\, the speaker will begin with the historical context of RISC-V's emergence\, explaining the historical opportunities and inevitability of its creation as an open and free ISA. Furthermore\, the speaker will showcase the remarkable achievements RISC-V has made in the software and open-source chip ecosystems\, particularly the policy support from EU\, China\, Brazil\, and India.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Announcing Pub Lightning! 🍺🌩️\n\nWelcome to the inaugural york.pub event. In case anyone isn't yet familiar with the york.pub project\, this is a brand-new initiative led by the computer-science student societies that aims to bring us closer both to each other and to the department itself. The aim of the project at its heart is to build a stronger community around CS at York and create spaces for genuine interactions between staff\, PHDs\, students and beyond.\n\n⚠️🗽 To help us with numbers\, please RSVP here (Mobilizon 'Participate' button having some issues not sending emails).\n\n\n\nWhat?\n\nThe first event that is being organised as part of the york.pub project is Pub Lightning\, an evening of short talks\; roughly ~10mins in length.\n\nWe all know what topics we're interested in and can often be quick to dismiss events that don't immediately align to that. There is so many cool pieces of research and projects from across our computer science community but many of them are too small\, too niche or too early to warrant their own event.\n\nAs a result\, there is very little opportunity for people to share what they spend their time working on\; students don't see what their lecturers are actually researching and likewise staff have no idea about all the external projects that their students get up to.\n\nAfter the event and during the interval there we will have some FESTIVE REFRESHMENTS so everyone can have some time to mingle and chat. 🧁🥃🥟\n\nWho?\n\nTalks Announced So Far:\n\n- Tom O'Neill : Ignore Previous Instructions and Attend This Talk On AI Security and Trust\n\n\n- Ren Herring : STOP BUYING RACK MOUNT SERVERS\n\n\n- Iain Bate : Real-time is not fast\n\n\n- Helen Petrie : What has technology ever done for us? Successes and failures in technology for disabled and older people\n\n\n- Ian Gray : Modern hardware is really complicated - or how I learned to stop worrying and love statistics\n\n\n- Will Redman: What we\, as game developers\, can learn from safety critical systems\n\n\n- Nathan Hughes: How (not) to integrate AI into work environment\n\n\n- Colin Paterson: Will AI ever be safe?\n\n\n- James Baxter: Can we trust robots?\n\n\nGet Involved:\n\nIf you would like to come and watch\, please RSVP using this form - we won't be checking but helps to judge refreshments. If you'd be interested in speaking\, we've got all the speakers for the December 2025 talk series but please register your interest to speak at future Pub Lightning (cfp.lightning.york.pub).\n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n\nIf you want to code along with the live coding you will need:\n\n- R and RStudio\n\n\n- R build toolchain: Rtools(windows) or XCode (mac) or r-base-dev\n\n\n- the following packages: devtools and assertthat\n\n\nYou can verify your system is set up by running: \n\ndevtools::has_devel()\n\n in the console\n\nSummary\n\nIn this talk I'll be covering why you might make an R package and how you can make one (spoilers: there are more reasons than you probably think\; it's easier than you probably think). The talk should be accessible to people with minimal R experience and immediately useful to those who have been using R for a while. I will discuss where packages come\, where they live on your computer and the different states a package can be in. I will then live-code making a minimal package using the devtools approach. We will add functions\, documentation\, dependencies and a license. I will also show you how to check the package and how to use it interactively.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nby the end of this session you will able to:\n\n- explain the rationale for writing packages\n\n\n- describe the different states a package can be in\n\n\n- create a minimal package and explain its key components\n\n\n- add functions with usethis:use_r()\n\n\n- use the package interactively with ```devtools::load_all()```\n\n\n- use devtools::check() to execute R CMD check\n\n\n- add a license with usethis::use_mit_license()\n\n\n- add documentation using roxygen2 and devtools::document()\n\n\n- add package dependencies with usethis::use_package()\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:This week we're incredibly lucky to be joined by another external speaker: Jo Cook. Jo will talk about why standards are important\, what goes into creating and maintaining them\, and how we wouldn't be where we are today without them. Are standards the unsung heroes of both Open Source and proprietary software alike?\n\nJo has been involved with the open source and open data community for almost 20 years now\, which makes her feel really old. She can currently be found wrangling financial spreadsheets into shape for a transparency NGO in the extractives industry\, but her real passion is around making the dull but necessary stuff\, like standards more accessible. She owns not one\, but two metadata-themed t-shirts.\n\nAfter Jo's talk\, we'll retire downstairs for a warming cup of Hot Chocolate. Following the resignation of our treasurer\, we also need to select a new treasurer as part of what YorkSU calls an EGM process which we will be doing next Monday. If you would be interested in helping run the society then your support would be hugely appreciated.\n\nFind out more and submit your interest: https://nc.york.pub/apps/forms/s/aWDz2ejsJgqZ6kM3QRgy8TPc\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Get your pencils and plotting rods ready\, this week we're assembling the troops and for our first strategic discussion about the inaugural York/Lancaster Robot Wars which will hopefully take place as part of Roses.\n\nIf anybody wishes to participate and has not yet done so\, please fill in this form. This is the first event\, you've not missed anything.\n\nhttps://nc.york.pub/apps/forms/s/XmMoCKqeCR9o355xj8kKGg9e?context=events\n\n\n\nThere is a rough semblance of a plan:\n\n- Roses will be starting on the 1st May 2026 (5 months & 16 days away at the time of writing)\n\n\n- Lancaster have confirmed their willingness to participate and we'll be having an initial video chat in the latter half of this week\n\n\n- We're going to try and meet in person to nail down full details BEFORE CHRISTMAS\n\n\nThose things in mind\, the toughest thing about this project will be the integration and coordination of it all. This first meeting is really to get everyone together\, generate ideas and build a plan\; drawing on people's previous experiences and working out what people want to explore further. We'll get the good old fashioned sugar paper and Sharpies out and look at possible design approaches\, what challenge ideas people have and how we want to structure/organise programming and building.\n\nThose of you who indicated on the interest form that you'd be interested in project management are particularly integral to this session and we'll get together in a group to talk more about this. To be clear\, you will be involved with the initial Lancaster meeting too.\n\n

CATEGORIES:RISC-V
DESCRIPTION:This week we're having to do our event in the morning because we are incredibly lucky to be joined by Mr Wei WU\, an academic at the Institute of Software\, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS) in Beijing.\n\nYou will have heard the two major processor architectures\, ARM & x86\, with plenty of very Open Source projects relying on these\; Raspberry Pi for example. Did you know though that these are strictly the intellectual property of their respective companies involved? ARM for example makes all of its money by Licensing its designs to the likes of Apple\, Snapdragon and Nvidia. RISC-V aims to introduce another option\, providing a lower-power\, more efficient CPU design that comes with all of the benefits of an open source project. The majority of RISC-V CPUs today are embedded systems but the RISC-V project has big aspirations to bring RISC-V to our phones\, laptops and even servers.\n\nOne of the people who is deep in the heart of this mission is Mr Wei WU as you will see from his bio. In this talk we'll hear just why RISC-V is so exciting\, what it can do technically and about some of the wider contexts surrounding open source projects like these in China.\n\nTalk Overview:\n\nAs a young and open ISA standard\, the RISC-V has the potential to capture a quarter of the global processor market share within its 20-year lifespan. Some bold predictions even suggest that RISC-V will become the most dominative ISA in the worldwide IT industry by 2036\, serving as a cornerstone of the global open-source ecosystem due to its open and free nature. In this presentation\, the speaker will begin with the historical background of RISC-V's emergence\, explaining the historical opportunities and inevitability of its creation as an open and free ISA. Furthermore\, the speaker will showcase the remarkable achievements RISC-V has made in the software and open-source chip ecosystems\, particularly the policy support from EU\, China\, Brazil\, and India. Finally\, the speaker will briefly introduce how the Jiachen Project\, established in China in 2024\, plans to achieve RISC-V coverage in almost all IT scenarios within 12 years.\n\nAbout Wei WU:\n\nWei Wu is the founder and project director of the PLCT (Programming Language and Compilation Technology) lab. Improving the software ecosystem for RISC-V has been set as one of the most important strategic objectives of PLCT lab. His team maintains a series of key open source infrastructure such as OpenJDK RISC-V backend\, V8 RISC-V backend\, Spidermonkey RISC-V JIT backend\, LuaJIT RISC-V downstream implementation\, as well as GNU Toolchain\, Clang/LLVM RISC-V backend. The TARSIER project he launched at the end of 2021 has taken a big step forward in RISC-V desktop computing and Linux distribution support. He is the ISCAS representative at RVI TSC and the chair of ISA Infrastructure Horizontal Committee. \n\nWei Wu launched a more ambitious plan in February 2024: the Jiachen Project. The mission of the plan is to cover all information industry fields with RISC-V within 12 years and obtain support from all major commercial software products. This is Wei Wu’s latest effort to promote and improve the RISC-V software ecosystem.\n\nWei Wu has served as a director of the LLVM Foundation Board of Directors (BoD) since 2022\, and is committed to maintaining the healthy development of the LLVM community\, improving LLVM infrastructure\, and attracting more groups to join the LLVM developer community. Additionally\, he serves as a director of the CHIPS Alliance Foundation.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:"Over 1 billion people regularly play video games. Almost all video games log activity with centralised servers and video game companies therefore own huge amounts of data relating to individual problem solving and cognition which often span many years for each player. These data represent a valuable resource for neuroscientists - potentially allowing us to probe cognition at a global scale with vast numbers of subjects.\n\nI will describe some of the experiments we have conducted over the past decade using online and in-lab video games. These include studies of personality\, cognitive performance\, group co-operation and cohesion\, learning and flow state. Much of this work uses very large online behavioural datasets but I will also describe recent experiments which use neuroimaging (source-imaged MEG and Hidden Markov Models) to examine moment-to-moment changes in cortical activity as players switch in and out of different cognitive states. \n\nI will discuss our plans for the future including the ongoing development of a data ‘observatory’ to allow open access to these datasets for the entire scientific community." -Alex Wade\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Are you an EPIC GAMER? No\, me neither.\n\nYou often see though that even Free & Open Source evangelists will make an exception to play their favourite games\; with platforms like Steam being very Linux friendly despite not actually being open source itself. That doesn't mean there doesn't exist truly Open Source games though (Wikipedia List).\n\nJoin us this week as we delve into some of the open offerings - the most well known of which being things like Luanti (FKA. Minetest) or SuperTuxKart. I personally don't really play that many video games but I do like multiplayer games that you can play as a group in a room together. Set your expectations appropriately\, grab a mouse for your laptop and lets muddle our way through the rules\, controls and crashes (only joking) to find out if the games are free and fun or a libre let-down!\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Quite possibly the closest thing to a digital privacy panacea is total observability: starting with open source applications and having full visibility of every intermediate component down to the literal power plug. 🔌\n\nSelf-hosting allows us to get pretty close to this\; by having a server in our own home we know exactly where our data is\, who has access to it and what is protecting it. Getting set-up with a 'home lab' isn't just for privacy nuts though 🥜: it can have very competitive running costs 💰 (your only subscription fee is your electricity bill)\, its an amazing learning opportunity 🧑‍🎓 AND you can do things that just aren't possible using cloud services ☁️.\n\nThis week we'll be talking all about what welcoming a server into your home entails. 🏠\n\n... What hardware do I need?... What can I do with it? ... Is it difficult to get started? ... What are the alternatives? .... What on earth is a Reverse Proxy?\n\nAll of these are questions we'll be answering this Monday at 18:30!\n\nIf you're a beginner then we'll show you just how easy it is to get your own private Nextcloud running (similar to G-Suite). If you're a homelab expert then join us to evangelise about your prized services and chat dashboards and docker.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Would you be interested in joining us at FOSDEM? If you would like to find out more about what the conference entails or how the trip will work then come along to this meeting. There is absolutely no obligations at this point so find out if this is something you'd be interested in. If you can't make this meeting or only see this post later\, please just speak to us at one of our events or email me wds509@york.ac.uk and I'll talk you through everything.\n\nSorry about the short notice\, because of this\, there is the option to join the meeting online if that's more convenient for you (Nextcloud Self-Hosted Conferencing 😉)\, see link below.\n\nRegardless whether you are coming to this meeting\, please register your interest using this form:\n\nhttps://nc.york.pub/apps/forms/s/QFgGn7ES85LaeDyjPHNGb8gx\n\n\n\nAbout FOSDEM\n\nFOSDEM is an annual event held each year in Brussels\, Belgium. With over 1\,000 different talks going on throughout the two-day period\, it is the biggest conference in the world FULL STOP (can't find the source for that but they definitely said so last year).\n\nThere are speakers covering every facet of computer science you can possibly imagine from Linux Distributions to Open Source Data Analysis and even representatives from the EU Commission.\n\nYou can find out more at https://fosdem.org but the best way to see the true variety is by looking at last year's schedule. On Desktop you can look at this MASSIVE calendar view for Saturday and Sunday or have a look around starting from https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/.\n\nThe dates for FOSDEM 2026 are Saturday January 31st and Sunday February 1st which is the weekend immediately before refreshers week. The exact plans around transportation and accommodation will be decided based on how many people are interested etc. but basically its pretty hands off from the society point of view - the society has practically no money to fund the trip unfortunately so its on you but we will do our best to work together so we can make things as affordable as possible. The conference itself is completely free though.\n\nLast year we ended up staying in two different places - some of us in a hotel and some in a hostel and we all were able to travel by Eurostar at different times. It all worked out well though and we met up and had a great time. We're planning a little bit further in advance this time to so we might be able to coordinate a little bit more tightly.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:When people talk about building a PC\, there is one thing that they don't usually tend to make themselves: the case. Why not? There is no silicon or rare earths\, transistors or traces. It should be easy to build a perfectly functional case from literal rubbish... Right?\n\nThis week\, we're going to be attempting to do exactly the opposite of your boring old PC builder\; using a pre-built component package with a custom-built case. \n\n- What does it take to achieve good airflow? \n\n\n- How hard is it to make a case that actually looks half decent?\n\n\n- Can a cardboard case offer any protection?\n\n\nWe'll find out the answer to these questions this week as we get stuck in with glue and cardboard to build our own PC cases! 📦\n\nPrizes for the best performing and best looking case! 🥇\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We're delighted to welcome Tom Stoneham from the department of Philosophy to share his insights and research around the issue of digital sovereignty and the role that Open Source has in achieving this sought after objective.\n\nSince the appearance of the 'broligarchy' at the Inauguration\, and the Trump administration's subsequent upending of the geopolitical order\, many countries are thinking harder about the risks of reliance on US Big Tech and exploring ideas of digital sovereignty. This is not new - the European Commission has been supporting development of the Euro Stack for almost five years - but feels increasingly urgent. However\, the diagnosis of the problem as one of relying on 'US owned' companies is mistaken\, and consequently the conception of digital sovereignty being pursued will not provide long-term security for nation states. This talk will cover political theory\, asking just what is a state?\, legal theory\, introducing and rejecting regulosolutionism\, and look at positive ideas about how to achieve genuine digital sovereignty\, drawing on the example of Schleswig-Holstein and research by the economist Cecilia Rikap et al.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We apologise for the short turn-around time on this one everyone. Every year\, Edinburgh University host a very large Hackathon called HackTheBurgh which is both very high profile and very well attended. This event is open to students at any UK University so in the spirit of collaboration and broadening our horizons\, HackSoc are coordinating a delegation to attend from the University of York.\n\nApplications are very competitive and we are far from guaranteed that all[/any] of the University of York teams will be granted a place. Still\, you have to be in it to win it so if you are interested then we are having a quick discussion about what we know and to arrange potential teams at 15:30 on Friday. This will be in person in The Pod (CSE/080x) or you can join online on one of the Discord voice channels. In the meantime\, you can find out more on the HackTheBurgh website. https://www.hacktheburgh.com/\n\nThe event is happening on the 1st - 2nd of November but applications must be submitted before 29th September which is why we are meeting on Friday to make arrangements. We shall be taking the train up which should be subsidised by both Edinburgh & YorkSU via HackSoc's annual grant.\n\nAll the best\, hope to see some of you get involved.\n\n

Wondered why half a tree is used to describe a protocol specification? 🌳\n\nSurely you don't need 110 pages to explain how to ask for the time[1]? ⏰\n\nOur first proper event of the year invites you to explore exactly this\; can't we just jot down bullets and go?\n\nThe premise is simple:\n\n- We give you a scenario. 🐴\n\n\n- We split the cohort into groups. 👥👥\n\n\n- Spend as long as you like formalising\, planning and documenting your protocol. 📝\n\n\n- We split your group in half. 💔\n\n\n- The only way you're allowed to communicate with one another is via hand-written snail mail. 🐌\n\n\n- You must each implement your protocol specification (e.g. client and server). 🧑‍💻\n\n\n- Winning group makes the most robust\, compatible and feature rich protocol. 🏆\n\n\n\n\nThis should be great fun for everyone of all abilities\, a great laugh and the perfect opportunity to meet new people.\n\n[1] RFC 5905: Network Time Protocol https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5905#page-104\n\n

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THIS EVENT IS AT 18:30 UK TIME (BST)\, NOT AT 17:30 OR 19:30.\n\nFrom listening to sceptics\, you'd think Linux breaks all the time! 👀\n\nOf course\, this just isn't true but sadly all computers do occasionally break... and sometimes we break them. 🤭\n\nIn this week's talk we'll be showcasing the versatility\, flexibility and expandability of Linux with 15 'modifications' that range from vaguely cursed to 100% BORKED.\n\nHere's the format: "work" on a virtual machine until it no longer runs\; reset\; repeat. At least 5 systems are harmed in the production of this event. 🪦\n\nThere will be plenty to learn about the curiosities and capabilities of Linux from our cautionary catalogue of careless changes. Nothing is safe\; neither the UI or the UEFI. Expect chaos\, cursed scripts\, and critical kernel errors.\n\nAs you'll see\, Linux systems are resilient\, and you have to throw quite a lot at one to stop it working. Breakages are also a great (and fun!) way of learning the ins and outs of a system.\n\nWe also have our regular software spotlight where we look at useful\, little known or plainly cool FOSS applications. This week we explore logseq\, a great Obsidian-like notes database with whiteboard\, markdown and page graph support. There is no better time to experiment with different applications to find your perfect solution for taking lecture notes!\n\n
